Recently, a fellow member of the AEU's CRT Network alerted me to excellent free professional development avialable via DEET on Cross Cultural Awareness Training.
The 3 modules take about half an hour each, are easy to complete, make interesting reading and viewing and certificates of completion are easy to download.
All of us need the professional knowledge of how to ensure we are delivering education that is inclusive of our indigenous students as well as being up to speed on ensuring we are able to highlight indigenous cultural perspectives and work with our local indigenous staff and communities in our professional capacity. This initiative of DEETs is long overdue, but most welcome!
I found completing the modules very straightforward. It proved up to date, often illuminating but enjoyable professional development I could undertake in the comfort of my own home.
I felt newly professionally and personally empowered having updated my cross cultural awareness training, having had few opportunities to update mine, since I first undertook a day's professional development run jointly by the AEU and the Victorian Association of Aboriginal Education Incorporated at the Aboriginal Advancement League in Thornbury, some 20 years ago.
This is essential professional development for all Victorian teachers.
Better still, you don't need an edumail account to access it.
