Over the years I have seen changes to laws as a result of presentation of my views to my local politicians.
One such example is my concern about young women I taught being sent overseas to enter forced marriages, when they were well under 18.
I urged my local member for Wills in Melbourne's northern suburbs, to address this issue by examining laws the UK had enacted to deal with the same issue.
Two years later, under the Gillard government, the Australian Parliament enacted laws to protect young people in this scenario and made it possible to prosecute their parents or guardians.
