Travelling ignoramuses fail to learn or observe much about the culture and dress protocols of the destination they are visiting. These are the sort of travellers who willingly breach acceptable dress codes of the culture they are are travelling within, like bare shoulders in countries where covering up is the norm.
When it comes to food, they will not know what knife and fork to use, think the finger bowl is a form of clear soup and drink it, or use their left hand, traditionally reserved for wiping your bottom with, in Islamic cultures, for eating. If visiting Israel or Turkey, they will try and order pork, or worse still want the familiar foods from home, available at every meal. Think of the steak and chips of the Brits, or Australians and Vegemite.
The ignorant traveller fails to tip for good service.
These sorts of travellers usually like to be right.
Recently, in Florence we witnessed an ignorant traveller arguing her way around town, beginning at the Affuzi Museum, then later at the Medici Palace, as she claimed she had secured priority entry with her Florence pass. Yes she had, but what she failed to recognise was that so had other many others. All she need do was join the Museum pass holder que and within ten minutes she too could have been enjoying the Statue of David. Instead, she wasted precious minutes of her day and pass making the security guard's life a misery. It was painful to see her arguing so vehemently she was so much more important than any one else in Florence, on what proved to be a very busy Sunday!
We speculated as to whether she had in fact spent her entire day arguing about her inflated sense of entitlement, at the expense of actually setting foot within a single one of the world heritage gems Florence has in multilples!
If you strike such ignoramuses in your travels, don't be afraid to support the staff and point them toward their rightful place; at the end of the que, like everyone else with the same entrance ticket she held!
